In 2022, we were commissioned by FUN! JAPAN to document Masahiro Bladesmith Workshop in Kyoto.
Inside the forge, every movement reflected years of accumulated experience. From heating raw steel to shaping, grinding, and sharpening the final blade, each step demanded precision, patience, and complete focus. Rather than simply recording the manufacturing process, our goal was to capture the quiet discipline that defines traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Knife making is visually striking, but dramatic sparks alone cannot tell the story.
The real challenge was revealing the rhythm, concentration, and dedication behind every movement without interrupting the craftsmen’s natural workflow.
We photographed the workshop almost entirely with available light, preserving the warmth of the forge and the surrounding shadows.
Instead of directing scenes, we observed each craftsman as they worked, allowing every frame to reflect genuine moments of concentration while emphasizing the contrast between glowing steel and the dark, textured environment.
This remains one of our favorite assignments.
Watching a craftsman transform raw steel into a finished knife over hours of meticulous work perfectly reflects the philosophy we value most: meaningful craftsmanship cannot be rushed.
The experience wasn’t simply about documenting knife making—it was about preserving a tradition built through patience, repetition, and pride.
