Great growth begins long before it becomes visible.
Deep within the mountains surrounding Khao Kho National Park in Thailand, I was invited by Soma Seeds to document a project that was never simply about cultivation. It was about creating the conditions for life to thrive.
What I found was not just a research farm, but a place where knowledge, patience, and generations of experience came together around a shared purpose.
Professionals from the Netherlands, Japan, and Thailand worked side by side, each bringing decades of expertise while learning from one another. Rather than focusing solely on production, every conversation returned to the same foundation: healthy soil, balanced ecosystems, and the belief that exceptional results begin beneath the surface.
Throughout the project, I witnessed knowledge being passed from experienced growers and researchers to a new generation of local cultivators. Techniques were demonstrated by hand, observations were shared in the field, and every decision reflected years of accumulated understanding. It was less like visiting a farm and more like observing a living classroom, where craftsmanship was preserved through practice rather than instruction alone.
The project itself focuses on regenerative agriculture and organic soil systems. By improving soil health and working with natural ecological processes, the team aims to cultivate consistently high-quality medicinal cannabis while reducing production costs and making future medical applications more accessible. Throughout the fields, even insects such as ladybirds became part of this ecosystem, replacing chemical intervention with natural balance.
For me, however, the most memorable subject was never the crop itself.
It was the people.
The quiet concentration while examining each plant. The conversations between cultures. The willingness to teach without reservation. The respect shown not only to the land, but also to those who will continue caring for it long after today’s harvest.
As photographers, we often document outcomes. This project reminded me that the most meaningful stories begin much earlier—in the unseen work, the patient preparation, and the relationships that allow something valuable to grow over time.
That philosophy feels remarkably familiar.
