Just one day before Ling Jiou Mountain’s 2026 Lunar New Year celebration officially began, we received unexpected news: Venerable Hsin Tao would descend to the Golden Buddha Hall to perform the ceremonial lighting.
With only minutes to prepare, we gathered our equipment and moved quickly into position to document a moment that was never part of the original plan.
Working under both time and ceremonial constraints, our priority was to remain unobtrusive while preserving the dignity of the occasion. Rather than chasing the event, we focused on the quiet gestures—the lighting of a single flame, the stillness before the ceremony, and the atmosphere that marked the beginning of the New Year celebration.
The resulting photographs document more than an unexpected assignment. They preserve the opening moment of an entire celebration—a rare occasion where preparation gave way to instinct, and readiness became as important as the photographs themselves.
